INTRODUCTION

The Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 2020 (Act 1027) establishes District officers of the Registry, located in all District Capitals. Section 8 (1) of Act 1027 classifies that, the District office of the registry as a Department of the District Assembly with a District Registrar. Section 8 (5) mandates the District Registrar to submit quarterly reports on births, fetal deaths and death to the District Assembly.

The Births and Deaths Department of the Bosomtwe District aims at registering all births and deaths that occurred in the district within the year.

MISSION

The Department of Births and Deaths exist to provide accurate, reliable and timely information of all births and deaths occurring within the district for socio-economic development through their registration and certification.

VISION

It is the vision of the registry to bring registration facilities to the doorstep of every Ghanaian in every community, therefore, generating reliable statistical data for planning.

FUNCTIONS PERFORMED BY THE REGISTRY

The functions of the registry can be divided into two categories namely; the statistical and the legal functions.

STATISTICAL FUNCTIONS PERFORMED BY THE REGISTRY

  1. The register all births, deaths and foetal deaths occurring within the district.
  2. To conduct sample registration surveys of Births and Deaths to enable the registry estimate the level of demographic parameters of the district. (i.e fertility, mortality and growth rates of population).
  3. To use the results of sample survey to improve and expand the coverage of the registration system so as to produce reliable vital statistical data policy makers in decision making.

LEGAL FUNCTIONS PERFORMED BY THE REGISTRY

  1. Registering and documenting all Births and Deaths recorded.
  2. Issuing Births and Deaths certificates.
  3. Late registration of Births and Deaths.
  4. Issuing of certified copies of entries in registers of Births and Deaths to enable public to make legal claims.
  5. Correction of insertion into the register of Births and Deaths events already registered.
  6. Preparation of valid documents for exhumation of remains of deceased persons.
  7. Processing of documents for exhumation, removal and reburial of the remains of death persons.
  8. Verification and authentication of Births and Deaths certification for institution especially foreign mission in Ghana.

CONCLUSION

The Department anticipates that it will have a fruitful year and hope to be given the necessary funding resources and logistics in order to accomplish its aims.
