THE 37TH NATIONAL FARMERS DAY CELEBRATION

To celebrate the farmers in Ghana for their hardworking and enormous contribution towards growth and development of the country the Bosomtwe District on 3rd December held its 37th Farmers’ Day celebration to commemorate this event at Amakom communities.

The celebration with the theme “Planting for food and jobs- Consolidating Food Systems in Ghana” which was graced by the Honorable Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe Constituency and Education Minister, Dr. Osei Yaw Adutwum and the District Chief Executive for Bosomtwe District Hon. J.K Assuming, Esq, saw the attendance of Nananom for  Amakom and Ankaase communities, Honorable Assembly members for various communities, some staff from the District Assembly, the media and inhabitants for Amakom communities.          

Mr. Eric Fofie, the Bosomtwe District Agric Director in his submission congratulated all the farmers for a wonderful work done especially amidst the COVID-19 pandemic and seasonal changes which was a challenge. He continued that COVID-19 pandemic has really testified that Ghana has improved in its agriculture. This is because, there were enough food to feed the populace without relying on importation of food. He attributed all these improvement to the government initiatives like Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ), Planting for Export and Rural Development (PERD), One District One Factory, Modernized Agriculture and others. He continued to commend his staff, cocoa service extension officers and some NGO’s ie AROCHA for their great work done. He pleaded that the government subsidize fertilizer and if possible, add weedicide and animal feed due to the impact of Covid 19 on these items. Ending his submission, he commended the District assembly for the flashy prizes to be giving to the various winners for the year and advices farmers to consider climate change whenever undertaking their activities.

The District Fire Commander in his address, said it is the mandate of the Fire Service to prevent fire outbreak instead of controlling. He further said there were several fire outbreaks in the district where a 17 acre of cocoa farm was burnt. He ended his speech by commending the Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe Constituency for providing them with motor bikes to embark on education on fire preventives measures at the various communities and advised farmers to be considerate on the time at which the want to burn .

Hon. Joseph Kwasi Asuming, Esq, the District Chief Executive of Bosomtwe District Assembly congratulated the farmers for the good works over the past years to ensuring that food is always available for the citizenry. He further thanked the chief, assembly member and the people for ensuring a proper commemoration of the District Farmer’s day in their community. He further educated the people on the bye-laws governing the Bosomtwe district as being in legal effect hence people of obey it. The honorable D.C.E closing his speech entreated chiefs present to properly allocate lands to ensuring development of their communities.

The Hon. Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe Constituency and Minister for Education also in his submission praised all farmers for their continuous support to the Ghanaian existence. He reiterated that the theme for the year’s farmer’s day celebration was to support and encourage farmers to continuously liaise with the vision of His Excellency the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo. He again stated that every farmer has the dream of seeing their wards to higher level of education hence the initiative of the President i.e “Free Secondary Education” was to enable every child has access to quality education. He also talked about some of the developmental projects that the Bosomtwe District through him has witnessed. Closing his submission, he entreated chiefs, parents and teachers to carefully monitor and encourage their wards to take their education seriously which will give them a clear path to success.

The chief of Amakom in his closing remarks commended all the farmers for ensuring that we always get food to eat. He also thanked the Hon. MP and Hon. D.C.E for the efforts they are putting in to ensuring the Bosomtwe District witness development. He also was happy that the Amakom community has witnessed such a memorable occasion.

The celebration ended with various awardees taking their prices and being commended for their hard work.
