THE ROLE OF ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH UNIT
Food Safety and Hygiene Inspections:
- The officer needs to ensure that all the food vendors within the district are well medically screen;
- Observing food hygiene handling practices;
- Check food storage and preparation area;
- Assessing personal hygiene and cleaning of the premises;
- Education them on diseases are associated with poor hygiene practices.
2. Monitoring Water and Air Quality
- The officer collects water sample from source, treatment plant and distribution system;
- Analyse samples for physical, chemical and biological parameters, examples pH, turbidity etc.;
- Inspect water treatment process, PPE and facilities;
- Investigate and educate waterborne illness outbreak;
3. Noise Pollution Control.
- The officer will investigate noise complaints and conduct site visit;
- Using the sound level meter (calibration) to measure the noise level;
- You will identify source of excessive;
- Education.
4. Waste management and disposal.
- Conducting site visited to ensure proper waste disposal and management practices
- Inspecting waste facilities, such as landfill, transfer station and recycling center.
- Taking enforcement action, such as issuing fines or penalties for non-compliance
- Guidance on proper waste handling, storage and disposal practices,
- Education on improper waste management.
5. Pest control and vector management
- You inspect premises that shows sign of pest examples rodents, cockroaches, and bed bugs etc.
- You identify the pest species and determine the source of infestation.
- You educate on pest control measures such as trapping
- Implement vector control measures, such as larval control.
- Collaborate with pests Control professionals and carried out fumigation exercise.
6. Domiciliary inspections.
- The officer needs to investigate complaints related to environmental health hazard.
- Assessing sanitation, hygiene and safety
- Check for complaint with environmental health regulations and laws
- Take enforcement action if necessary, to protect public health
7. Market Sanitation
- Regular inspections of the market, stalls and food premises
- Assessing the cleanliness and hygiene of vendors and traders. Monitoring for signs of pest infestation and taking corrective action.
- Providing education and training on proper sanitation and hygiene practices
- Enforcement regulations and taking enforcement action when necessary.
8. Port Health.
- Inspect ship, cargo and containers for sign of pest infestation, contamination or other health risks.
- Conduct surveillance for diseases of public health concern such as COVID19, and Ebola.
- Enforcing regulations related to port health including quarantine and isolation when necessary.
9. Slaughterhouse Inspections
- Conduct Inspections unannounced or with minimal notice
